Creating sustainable communities with the Gift of Light
Philips brightened up the world of young students and families during the handover of Solar Lamps and Cookstoves as part of their Gift of Light initiative.
Donation handover at Orange Farm
Philips have been facilitating donations to off-grid communities who have intermittent to no access to electricity, allowing the public to help contribute to improving these families’ lives since December 2014.
All donations collected as part of the campaign drive was matched by the Philips Foundation and the products were delivered on the 9th of July in collaboration with Afrika Tikkun to the community of Orange Farm Johannesburg.
Developing innovation that matters
There’s a huge need for alternatives to assist people living in impoverished off-grid areas. While a simple solar lamp might not mean much to those with electricity, to a family living off the grid, it means more family time, more study time and more time to play safely,” said Christoph Castellaz, Philips Africa Head of Strategy and New Business Development: Africa. “We at Philips are not only committed to developing innovative solutions to assist these families but as a company we will also match any donations to ensure the difference made is significant,” he continued.
Thank your for your donations
Based on their achievement with the Afrika Tikkun charity, children who have performed well on school level have been awarded a Philips Solar lamp to help them improve and complete their education. Afrika Tikkun is a charitable organisation that supports the community from cradle to career, helping to not only provide children with education but assisting them in developing employable skills for a sustainable career and life.
